How Elon Musk Ruined Verification on Social Media

Hey there,

If you remember a time when getting that precious blue checkmark on Twitter actually meant something, then you know exactly what changed once Elon Musk decided to overhaul the verification process. It used to signal credibility, authenticity, and a level of trust—you couldn’t buy it; you had to earn it.

So, what happened? In late 2022, Musk introduced a subscription model for Twitter Blue, effectively allowing anyone with a credit card to purchase that once-exclusive badge. Suddenly, the distinction between actual celebrities, reputable brands, or industry experts and random trolls with $8 a month to spare became incredibly blurry.

Here’s the kicker:

  • Credibility Tanks: When anyone can pay for a badge, it loses its value. A verified bot account looks nearly identical to a legitimate news source.
  • User Trust Erodes: Users become more skeptical, double-checking if a “verified” user is the real deal or just an impersonator.
  • Brand Confusion: Companies and influencers who relied on that checkmark as a badge of authority now have to find alternative ways to prove authenticity.

The Ripple Effect We’re not just talking about Twitter. Other platforms, like Meta, have also flirted with the idea of paid verification. The entire social media ecosystem feels the tremors as users question: “What does being verified really mean anymore?” That’s a brand-new challenge for marketers, influencers, and businesses seeking credibility in a crowded digital arena.

What Should You Do About It?

  • Build Brand Authority Elsewhere: Focus on platforms that prioritize real credentials—like LinkedIn’s endorsements or even guest-contributing to trusted publications.
  • Emphasize Social Proof: Testimonials, industry awards, and user-generated content can become your new “badge” of authenticity.
  • Engage Your Community: A badge is less powerful than an active, loyal audience who openly vouches for you.

You can’t control Twitter’s or any other platform’s verification policies. But you can control how you show up consistently, deliver value, and establish trust, with or without that little blue check.
